How can we help you?

Drinking water quality in the US has always been regarded as being clean and safe. However, in the recent past contaminants such as PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) have threatened to change this narrative. The current administration has taken a major step by introducing the first-ever national standard for PFAS. This revolutionary step will ensure that Americans get access to clean drinking water.

Understanding PFAS

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in various industries worldwide since the 1940s. These chemicals are also known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily and can last for hundreds of years in the environment.

Many daily use items such as non-stick pans, water-repellent clothing, makeup products, medical devices, and food packaging contain PFAS. Once we use these items, we get exposed to PFAS and they enter our body. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to several health issues such as cancer, liver damage, decreased fertility, increased cholesterol levels, developmental issues in children, and immune system problems.

The New Regulations

With the new national drinking water standard the government aims to limit the presence of PFAS in public water systems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the first national drinking water standards for five types of PFAS chemicals – PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and HFPO-DA.

Among these, the limit for two common kinds of PFAS – PFOA and PFOS has been set to 4 parts per trillion (ppt), which means that water companies will now have to rigorously monitor and reduce PFAS levels to adhere to these new rules.

Why This Matters

Health Protection

PFAS regulation in drinking water is vital for public health considering the negative health impact caused by long-term exposure to these forever chemicals. This landmark decision by the government will help reduce these risks and safeguard the public.

Environmental Impact

Other than causing health issues these chemicals also cause environmental issues. These persistent chemicals get collected in soil and water and affect our wildlife and ecosystems. Thus making it essential to take steps to reduce their impact on Mother Earth.

Public Awareness

Most people aren’t aware of the presence of these chemicals in water and the negative impacts that they cause. The new rules and regulations on PFAS will also help raise public awareness and enable individuals to make better consumer choices. Plus even manufacturers will feel pressured to find safer alternatives.

What This Means for You

As a person who is aware of the implications of these regulations, you can make informed decisions to elevate your drinking water quality. Here are some steps you can take:
